Hi,
Editing long videos with heavy dialogue can be tedious, but you don't have to watch hours of footage from start to finish.
CapCut has some highly effective features and workflows designed to speed up this process and keep your dialogue perfectly intact.
Below are the best hacks and tools you can use:
1. The Ultimate Hack: "Transcript-Based Editing"
Instead of scrubbing through the timeline to find where you or your subject spoke, you can edit your video like a text document.
-
How to use it: Select your video clip in the timeline, scroll the bottom toolbar to the right, and select Transcript-based editing (sometimes labeled as Transcript or Edit by Text).
-
How it saves time: CapCut will transcribe all the speech in your video. You can read the text, select the specific sentences, words, or awkward pauses you want to get rid of, and tap Delete. The corresponding video and audio will automatically be cut for you!
-
Pro Tip: If you have the Pro version, this menu also features a one-tap Remove filler words button that instantly deletes all the "uhms," "ahs," and long silences.
2. Generate "Auto Captions" First
Instead of writing subtitles at the end of your workflow, generate them right at the start.
-
How to use it: Go to Text > Auto Captions and let CapCut generate subtitles for your entire video.
-
How it saves time: When you scrub through your timeline, the subtitles will be visible on the preview screen. This allows you to visually scan what is being said at any frame without actually having to play and listen to the audio. If you see a caption block of irrelevant dialogue, you can immediately split and delete that section.
3. Read the Audio Waveform (Visual Cutting)
Your ears can be slow, but your eyes are incredibly fast.
-
How to use it: Pinch outward on your timeline to zoom in so you can see the audio waveform clearly.
-
How it saves time:
-
Flat lines mean silence. You can quickly cut these parts out without listening.
-
Wavy peaks indicate speaking.
-
By simply looking at the shape of the audio track, you can jump directly to where the speech begins and ends, avoiding all the dead air in between.
-
4. The 1.5x Speed Review Method
If you must listen to the clip to ensure nothing is missed, don't do it at normal speed.
-
How to use it: Select your clip, tap Speed > Normal, and set it to 1.5x or 2x speed. Ensure you toggle the Keep pitch (or Voice Tone) option so the voices don't sound like chipmunks.
-
How it saves time: You can listen and make your split cuts in half the time. Once you are finished cutting out the unwanted sections, select your remaining clips and change the speed back to 1.0x before exporting.
