I'm having an issue where the Remove Background feature has completely disappeared from my CapCut app.
I've already tried the usual troubleshooting steps:
- Cleared the app cache
- Updated CapCut to the latest version
- Deleted and reinstalled the app
- Restarted everything I could think of
Unfortunately, none of those fixed the problem. The feature has been missing for about 3 days, and it's preventing me from working on my edits.
What's confusing is that I checked CapCut on a family member's phone, and the Remove Background option is still there, so I'm not sure why it's missing only on my device.
Hi,
Since you have already completed the basic steps (cache, update, reinstall, restart), the good news is that your app installation itself is clean.
When a feature disappears on one device while remaining active on another running the same CapCut version, it almost always points to UI relocation, account-based rollout testing (A/B testing), or a network/cloud flag.
Here is how to identify and fix the cause:
1. Check if the Feature Was Relocated Under "Cutout"
CapCut frequently updates its bottom toolbar layout. "Remove Background" is generally renamed or nested under submenus:
-
Tap directly on your video clip in the timeline so it has a white box around it. (The option will not appear if no clip is selected).
-
Scroll through the bottom toolbar to look for Cutout instead of "Remove Background".
-
Inside Cutout, check if Auto Removal, Custom Removal, or Chroma Key appear there.
2. Check for Account-Specific A/B Testing
CapCut uses phased server-side rollouts and A/B testing. They dynamically push or hide certain AI tools based on your Account ID rather than your app version.
-
Test it: Log out of your CapCut account on your phone and log into the family member’s account (or test in Guest Mode).
-
If "Remove Background" suddenly reappears, the issue is tied to your account profile on CapCut's cloud servers, not your phone.
3. Check VPN, Proxy, or Ad-Blockers
Background removal relies on CapCut’s cloud AI servers to process the subjects in your frame. If your phone is running a VPN, AdGuard/Private DNS, or strict network filters that your family member's phone doesn't have, CapCut’s server checks may fail silently and hide the tool entirely.
-
Turn off any active VPN or custom DNS.
-
Switch from Wi-Fi to Mobile Data (or vice versa) and restart the app.
4. Temporary Workarounds to Keep Editing
If your account is stuck in an A/B testing group, you can bypass the missing button while waiting for server sync:
-
Use CapCut Web: Log into capcut.com in a browser. Import your video, use the web-based Remove Background / Cutout tool, export the transparent or cutout clip, and bring it back into your mobile project.
-
Use the Overlay Method: On the mobile app, add your clip as an Overlay track. Sometimes the cutout/background removal option appears in the toolbar for overlay tracks even when it disappears from the main timeline track.
