How Can I Slow Down Timeline Playback?

I'm trying to sync a video clip to the bass of a song, and I'd like to slow down the timeline playback (not the actual clips) so it's easier to edit.

I found an old post from a few years ago saying that pressing J would slow playback, but on my version it only plays the timeline in reverse at -1x, -2x, -4x, -8x, and -16x. Similarly, L fast-forwards at increasing speeds.

Is there a way to play the timeline in slow motion without changing the clip speed?

I've been trying to figure this out for over an hour. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Unfortunately, CapCut currently doesn't have a true slow-motion preview/timeline playback feature (where the project plays at 0.5× or 0.25× without affecting your clips). Many users have requested it, but as of recent desktop versions it's still not available.

Regarding the shortcuts:

  • J = reverse playback (press repeatedly for -2×, -4×, etc.)
  • K = stop
  • L = forward playback (press repeatedly for 2×, 4×, etc.)

You mentioned regarding older posts having J for slow playback seems like it is a different version or is mistaken. Recent versions don't support that behavior.

What you can do instead

If you're syncing cuts to the bass of a song, these workarounds help:

  • Use the Left/Right Arrow keys to move the playhead frame by frame for very precise alignment. This is the closest built-in alternative to slow playback.

  • Zoom in on the timeline (Ctrl + mouse wheel or the timeline zoom slider) so the waveform is larger and beats are easier to line up.
  • Add beat markers (or make temporary cuts on the beats) before placing your clips. Many editors first mark the beats, then snap clips to those markers.
  • If your version supports it, expand the audio track height to make the waveform easier to read.

If you're coming from editors like Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, they both support slower playback/scrubbing options, but CapCut's desktop editor is still fairly limited in this area.

Can you tell me more details as below:

  • Windows or Mac?
  • CapCut Desktop version (Help → About),

I can check whether your specific version has any hidden preview playback controls that aren't available in older releases.
