CapCut Timeline Playhead Stuck and Won't Move During Playback

I'm having a weird issue with CapCut and was wondering if anyone else has run into this.

The timeline playhead (the vertical white line that shows your current position in the video) is completely frozen. When I hit Play, the video and audio play normally, but the playhead doesn't move at all. It just stays in one spot.

What's even stranger is that I can't manually move it either by clicking or dragging it on the timeline. Since the playhead is stuck, it's basically impossible to sync audio, check timing, or do any precise editing.

Here's what I've already tried:

  • Restarting CapCut

  • Rebooting my device

  • Clearing the app cache

  • Creating new projects with different media files

  • Updating CapCut to the latest version

Unfortunately, none of these fixed the problem.

I also found a few posts from other users describing the same issue, so I'm wondering if this is a bug introduced in a recent update.

Has anyone experienced this? If so, were you able to fix it, or is there a workaround?

Hi,

Yes, if the video and audio continue playing but the timeline playhead is completely frozen and can't even be dragged manually, that's much more indicative of a UI/timeline bug than a project or media issue.

Since you have already ruled out the common fixes (restart, cache, updates, new projects), here are a few things that are still worth checking:

  1. Reset the workspace/layout (desktop only).

    • If you are using CapCut Desktop, the timeline UI may have glitched. Try to reset the workspace or restore the default layout.

  2. Try changing the timeline zoom.

    • Zoom all the way out, then back in using the timeline zoom slider or keyboard shortcuts. Occasionally the playhead is visually "stuck" while the timeline rendering is broken.

  3. Switch preview quality or disable hardware acceleration (desktop).

    • GPU rendering bugs can sometimes affect timeline updates without affecting playback.

    • In CapCut use the Hardware Acceleration option in Settings, try toggling it and restarting the app.

  4. Test with a different input method.

    • If you're on desktop, see whether the playhead responds to:

      • Left-clicking the ruler

      • Arrow keys

      • Home/End keys

      • J/K/L playback shortcuts

    • If none of these work, it's likely the timeline itself has become unresponsive rather than just mouse input.

  5. Try an older version.

  6. Completely reinstall CapCut.

    • Simply updating often leaves configuration files intact.

    • A full uninstall followed by deleting any remaining CapCut configuration folders before reinstalling can sometimes resolve corrupted UI settings.

This does sound like a recent bug if:

  • It happens in every new project.

  • The playhead cannot be dragged at all.

  • Playback continues normally.

  • Other users are reporting the exact same behavior.

That combination usually points to a regression in the timeline UI rather than damaged project files.

A few questions that would help narrow it down:

  • Are you using CapCut Desktop (Windows/macOS) or Android/iPhone?

  • If desktop, which operating system and version?

  • Does the playhead stay frozen even when you use the spacebar to play/pause?

  • Can you still move the timeline by scrolling or zooming, or is the entire timeline unresponsive?

  • Did this start immediately after updating CapCut, or did it begin seemingly at random?

Those details will help me determine whether this is a platform-specific bug or something more localized.
