Unfortunately, if CapCut auto-saved after the deletion, recovery is difficult but it's still worth checking a few places before giving up.

1. Does CapCut for PC keep previous versions?

Generally, no. CapCut Desktop does not expose a version history for local projects like Google Docs or Premiere Productions.

If the project auto-saved after you deleted part of the timeline, that saved state becomes the current project. I could see reports of many users who have run into this limitation.

2. Check the actual project folder (most promising)

Don't just look in %AppData%\Roaming. Recent CapCut versions commonly store projects under Local AppData, not Roaming.

Look in these locations:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\CapCut\User Data\Projects\

or

C:\Users\<YourUser>\AppData\Local\CapCut\User Data\Projects\

If you find your project folder:

• Make a complete copy of the folder first (don't edit the original).

• Look for files such as:

  • draft_content.json

  • draft_info.json

  • .bak files

  • history folder

  • any .json files with older timestamps

You can try to successfully recover projects by replacing draft_content.json with an older copy found in a history folder or backup JSON. This isn't official, so success depends on your CapCut version.

3. Search your drive for backups

Use Windows search (or Everything by Voidtools) for:

draft_content.json
draft_info.json
*.bak
*.json

Sort by Date Modified.

Sometimes older project folders remain elsewhere if you've changed CapCut's project location.

4. Check Windows File History / Restore

If File History, OneDrive versioning, or another backup system was enabled:

• Right-click the project folder

• Properties → Previous Versions

This is one of the few ways to recover an overwritten project folder.

5. Cloud / CapCut Space

If your project lived in CapCut Space (Cloud):

• Open CapCut.

• Check whether there are duplicate cloud projects.

• Check any Trash/Deleted Projects section.

However, CapCut does not generally provide an accessible version history for ordinary cloud projects. If the synced project was overwritten by the autosave, the cloud copy is often updated as well.

6. Don't do these things yet

Until you've checked for backups:

• Don't uninstall CapCut.

• Don't clear the cache.

• Don't create lots of new projects (they may overwrite temporary data).

• Make a copy of your entire CapCut project directory before experimenting.

A couple of questions that could change the odds

1. Which CapCut Desktop version are you using? (Help → About)

2. Windows 10 or Windows 11?

3. Can you tell me what exists inside:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\CapCut\User Data\Projects\

Specifically:

• Do you see folders with random names?

• Is there a com.lveditor.draft folder?

• Does your project folder contain a history subfolder or any .bak files?
