I'm trying to record a voiceover, but whenever I start recording, the audio track I've already imported gets muted. I've looked everywhere for a solution but haven't been able to find one.
Has anyone else experienced this, or knows how to fix it?
Hi,
You are trying to time a voiceover perfectly to your background track, only for CapCut to hit the mute button on you the second you press record.
This is actually a built-in feature, not a bug. CapCut automatically mutes project audio during voice recording to prevent your microphone from picking up the playback sound, which would cause nasty echoes, feedback, or double-audio in your final edit.
However, if you are wearing headphones and want to hear the track while you record, you can easily turn this off. Here is how to fix it depending on whether you are on a phone or a computer:
If you are using CapCut Mobile (iPhone/Android)
CapCut Mobile has a direct toggle for this right in the audio recording menu.
-
Tap on Audio > Voiceover (the microphone icon).
-
Look right above or next to the big red record button. You will see a small checkbox or toggle labeled "Mute project audio".
-
Uncheck or toggle this off.
-
Put on a pair of headphones (essential, otherwise your mic will record the background music out loud!) and hit record.
If you are using CapCut Desktop (Mac/Windows)
The desktop version handles this slightly differently via a "Mute" toggle right in the recording panel.
-
Click the Microphone icon above the timeline to open the Record panel.
-
In the settings box that pops up (usually on the right side or right above the timeline), look for the Mute Project checkbox.
-
Uncheck "Mute Project".
-
Make sure your headphones are plugged in, then start your recording.
Pro-Tip to Avoid Feedback
If you disable this setting and leave your device's speakers on, your microphone will pick up the background track playing out loud. This results in a muddy, echoing voiceover. Always use wired or low-latency wireless headphones when recording with project audio unmuted!
Did turning off that toggle do the trick for you, or is the track still cutting out even with the setting changed?
