Hi,

Let us go step-by-step to try and recover your CapCut project.

First, let’s clarify a few things:

  1. Were you using CapCut PC (desktop version) on your old computer?

  2. Did you save your project to the cloud (CapCut Cloud Project) or only locally on the old computer?

  3. Did you use the same CapCut account (same email/login method) on the new computer?

Here's why this happened and what you need to do:

  1. CapCut Desktop Saves Locally: For the desktop version of CapCut, your project files are typically saved directly onto the hard drive of the computer you were working on. Logging into your account syncs things like your assets stored in CapCut's cloud space, templates, or account settings, but it does not automatically sync your actual project files across different computers.

  2. Your Project is Most Likely Still on Your OLD Computer: This is the good news. Your work hasn't just vanished; it's almost certainly still stored on the hard drive of your old computer.

Here's how to get your project back:

Step 1: Access Your OLD Computer

  • You need to turn on your old computer again.

Step 2: Find Your CapCut Project Files

  • Once your old computer is running, you need to find where CapCut saves its projects.

  • Open CapCut on your old computer.

  • Look for your project in the "Drafts" or "Projects" section. It should still be listed there.

  • Right-click (or find a similar option) on the project and look for an option like "Show in Folder," "Open File Location," or "Reveal in Explorer/Finder." This will open the folder where the project file is saved on your old computer.

  • Common Default Save Locations (If you can't find it via CapCut):

    • Windows: Look in Documents\CapCut\Projects or Videos\CapCut\Projects.
    • macOS: Look in Movies\CapCut\Projects or Documents\CapCut\Projects.
    • The exact path might vary slightly depending on your CapCut version and how it was installed, but look for a "CapCut" folder within your standard user folders (Documents, Videos, Movies).

Step 3: Copy the Project File(s)

  • Inside the project folder you found, you'll see files related to your project. There's usually a main project file (often with a .capcut extension or similar) and potentially folders containing project data.
  • Copy the entire folder associated with your project. Do NOT just copy the video files you used; you need the CapCut project file that tells the program how you edited them.

Step 4: Transfer the Project File(s) to Your NEW Computer

  • Use a USB flash drive, an external hard drive, or a cloud storage service (like Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive) to transfer the copied project folder from your old computer to your new computer.

Step 5: Place the Project File(s) on Your NEW Computer

  • On your new computer, open the location where CapCut saves its projects. This is usually the same path as on your old computer (e.g., Documents\CapCut\Projects on Windows).
  • Paste the project folder you copied from your old computer into this CapCut Projects folder on your new computer.

Step 6: Open the Project in CapCut on Your NEW Computer

  • Now, open CapCut on your new computer.
  • Go to the "Drafts" or "Projects" section. Your project should now appear in the list because you've placed its files in the location CapCut looks for them.
  • Open the project.

You must paste it into the same folder path and log in to the same CapCut account for it to work properly.

Troubleshooting After Opening:

  • "Media Offline" or Missing Files: If CapCut finds the project file but shows errors or says "Media Offline," it means it can't find the original video/image/audio files that you used in the project.
    • This happens if you moved the project file but not the source media files.
    • Go back to your old computer. Find all the original video clips, images, music, etc., that you imported into your project.
    • Copy all of those original media files to your new computer.
    • Ideally, place them in the exact same folder structure relative to the project file as they were on your old computer. For example, if your project was in Documents\CapCut\Projects\MyProject and your videos were in Documents\MyVideos, try to replicate that structure on the new computer.
    • If you can't replicate the structure, CapCut will usually ask you to locate the missing files. You'll need to manually point CapCut to where the files are now located on your new computer.

If You Don’t Have the Old PC

Do you still have the old hard drive? If so, you could connect it as an external drive using a USB-to-SATA adapter, and access the CapCut project files manually.

Check CapCut Cloud Projects

CapCut offers cloud sync only if you manually saved the project to the cloud.

  • Open CapCut on your new computer.

  • Go to “My Workspace” or “Projects” tab.

  • Look for a section called “Cloud Projects” or a cloud icon.

  • If it’s empty, the project was probably not saved to the cloud.

To Prevent This in the Future:

  • Always back up your CapCut project folders AND the media files you use somewhere safe (external drive, cloud storage).
  • When switching computers, make sure you manually transfer both the project files and all the source media files.
  • Keep your source media files organized in a predictable location.

Don't panic! The vast majority of the time, the project is simply still sitting on the old computer. Follow these steps, and you should be able to recover your work.

If none of this works:

CapCut unfortunately does not auto-sync projects to the cloud unless you explicitly save them there. If you didn’t back it up or save it to the cloud, and no files were manually copied from the old computer, then the project might be unrecoverable.
