Every time I apply one of my preset adjustments to a video, the screen goes completely black. The issue only happens with my saved presets—regular adjustments work fine.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Any idea how to fix it?
Hi,
From the video you provided, it appears you are encountering an issue in CapCut where the video turns black after applying a saved preset adjustment. This is a known occasional bug within video editing software, including CapCut.
Here are some common reasons this might happen and potential solutions:
Possible Reasons:
-
Corrupted preset data: The saved preset itself might have become corrupted, leading to display issues when applied.
- Software glitch: It could be a temporary bug or a compatibility issue between your CapCut version and the video file/device.
-
Resource limitations: Applying complex presets can be resource-intensive. If your device is low on RAM or processing power, the preview might fail to render correctly.
-
Conflicting adjustments: If the preset contains adjustments that conflict with existing video properties or other effects already applied, it might cause display errors.
Common Causes & Fixes
1. Corrupt or incompatible preset
Cause: Your saved preset might reference parameters or filters (like LUTs or effects) that no longer exist or conflict with the current CapCut version.
Fix:
-
Recreate the preset from scratch using the latest version of CapCut.
-
Avoid stacking too many intense adjustments like extreme exposure + contrast + shadows.
-
Test each adjustment one at a time before saving as a new preset.
2. Missing/Invalid LUT or Effect
Cause: If your preset includes a LUT or a resource that's missing from your system, it can cause the preview to go black.
Fix:
-
Go to Settings → Resource Folder and check if any LUTs/filters used in the preset are missing.
-
Try applying the preset to a different video format (MP4, MOV, MKV) and see if it still turns black.
-
If it contains a custom LUT or overlay, reimport that manually before applying the preset.
3. HDR/Color Profile Conflict
Cause: The video file might use a color space (like BT.2020, HDR10, or HLG) incompatible with the preset’s adjustment curve.
Fix:
-
Convert your video to Rec.709 SDR using a tool like Shutter Encoder or Handbrake.
-
Alternatively, in CapCut PC:
-
Right-click the video → Color Space → Try converting to SDR.
-
Then apply the preset again.
-
4. Hardware Acceleration/Rendering Bug
Cause: GPU-related bugs in CapCut can cause rendering issues, especially with Radeon GPUs or under "High Performance" mode.
Fix:
-
Turn off Hardware Acceleration:
-
Go to Settings → Performance → Turn off Hardware Acceleration.
-
-
Or, switch your graphics preference for CapCut:
-
Windows: Settings → Display → Graphics → CapCut → Set to "Power Saving" or "Let Windows decide".
-
5. Preset File Corruption
Fix:
-
Open your preset, note down its values (Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, etc.).
-
Re-apply these manually to a new clip.
-
If it works, save as a new preset and delete the old one.
Other Fixes:
-
Create a New Preset: Try to recreate the problematic preset from scratch. Apply the desired adjustments manually to a test video, and then save them as a new preset. This can help rule out corruption in the old preset.
-
Check for Conflicting Effects: If you have other effects or adjustments already applied to the video clip, try removing them before applying your preset. Then, re-add them one by one to identify any conflicts.
-
Simplify the Preset: If your preset is very complex (e.g., many layers of effects, extreme color grading), try simplifying it to see if a less intensive preset works. You can then try adding adjustments back incrementally.
-
Clear CapCut Cache: Sometimes, clearing the application's cache can resolve display issues. The method for doing this varies by device (e.g., in Android, go to App Info > Storage & cache > Clear cache).
-
Reinstall CapCut (Last Resort): If none of the above works, you might consider uninstalling and reinstalling CapCut. This will give you a clean installation, but remember to back up any important projects if possible.
If it’s still happening
If none of the above works, try this workaround:
-
Import your video.
-
Screenshot or write down your preset's values.
-
Manually input those values again (don’t use the preset).
-
If it works → save as a brand-new preset.
-
Delete the old one.
By systematically trying these solutions, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue with your CapCut presets.
