Capcut not adding my cover image

A relatively new user with the downloaded version of Capcut on a PC.  Most of the videos I created already, Capcut added a proper cover from the video, usually the first frame, automatically which I accept.  Lately, the software has been adding a random image from the video which does not work for me.  Tried to import my own image, edited it, saved it, then when I export the video - the same result keeps happening.

When I tried to select a frame from my video, I get the same results.

Capcut is not adding the image that I imported, and selecting an undesirable and blurry image as the cover image.  Capcut exports the video and the cover in a folder separately. Tried watching multiple how to videos and adding the cover - but the results continue to be the same.  What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

This is a very common confusion with the PC version of CapCut, and here nothing is actually wrong with your editing. The issue comes from how CapCut handles thumbnails vs. exported video frames. On desktop, the “cover” image is not embedded into the video file itself as it is exported as a separate image file, and most players ignore it.

On the PC version, when you add a cover:

  • CapCut exports two things:

    • video.mp4

    • cover.jpg

But:

  • Most video players (Windows Media Player, VLC, etc.) ignore the exported cover image.

  • They auto-generate a thumbnail from a random frame in the video.

  • That’s why you keep seeing a random blurry frame instead of the image you selected.

So your cover was exported, but your system/player simply isn't using it.

How to force the correct thumbnail?

Instead of using the Cover tool, add the cover image directly into the video itself.

Steps

  1. Import your cover image.

  2. Drag it to the very beginning of the timeline.

  3. Set its duration to 1–2 seconds.

  4. Export the video.

Now:

  • The first frame of the video becomes your cover

  • Every player and platform will display it correctly.

  • This is how many YouTubers ensure thumbnails appear correctly in previews.

If the video is for YouTube

If you are uploading to YouTube:

  • The CapCut cover does not matter at all.

  • You must upload a custom thumbnail directly in YouTube Studio.

Why CapCut sometimes chooses a random blurry frame?

This usually happens when:

  • The first frames contain motion blur

  • The clip starts with fade-in or transition

  • There is no still frame early in the video

Players then pick a random frame.

Quick checklist to test

Try this quick test:

  1. Add your image as the first clip.

  2. Duration: 2 seconds

  3. Export video

  4. Open the file again

You should immediately see your chosen cover.

Can you give more details about your case:

  • Where the video is going (YouTube, Instagram, course platform, local file, etc.)

  • Which version of CapCut PC you are using

we can tell you the exact thumbnail workflow most creators use so the correct image appears every time.
