The "Unfold" animation on the in animations randomly appears and disappears like a mood swing when I launch the app, and doesn't refresh unless I start over the project, and I need that animation for every video.

Hi,

This is a known CapCut bug, and it really does behave like a mood swing.
We will explain you what is going on and what you can realistically do about it.

What’s happening with Unfold in CapCut?

CapCut loads In animations dynamically, not all at once.

The “Unfold” animation:

  • Is not cached reliably

  • Sometimes fails to load when the project opens

  • Can disappear mid-session

  • Can reappear only after restarting the project or app

This happens more often when:

  • You are editing long projects

  • You duplicate clips many times

  • RAM is low (especially on mobile)

  • CapCut’s animation library fails to sync on launch

What “Unfold” actually is?

Unfold is:

  • An In animation

  • Aspect-ratio dependent

  • Layer-type dependent (video vs overlay vs text)

If CapCut misidentifies a clip’s state (very common after trimming or replacing media), the animation list partially refreshes and Unfold vanishes.

Reliable workarounds (tested & practical)

Method 1: Force animation refresh (fastest)

This works about 70% of the time.

  1. Select the clip

  2. Go to Animation → In

  3. Tap any animation

  4. Set it to 0.1s

  5. Go back → reopen In animations

Unfold reappears after the animation panel refreshes.

Method 2: Ratio toggle trick (most reliable)

CapCut reloads animations when the canvas ratio changes.

  1. Go to Canvas

  2. Change ratio (e.g. 9:16 → 1:1)

  3. Go back to Animation → In

  4. Switch ratio back

This forces CapCut to rebuild the animation list.

Method 3: Use Unfold once → copy attributes

This avoids relying on the animation menu at all.

  1. Start a fresh project

  2. Add ONE clip

  3. Apply Unfold

  4. Copy the clip

  5. Paste into your real project

  6. Use Copy → Paste attributes on every new clip

CapCut preserves the animation even if it disappears from the menu.

Method 4: Convert clips to overlays

Unfold is more stable on overlays than on main track clips.

  1. Move clip to Overlay

  2. Apply Unfold

  3. Resize to full screen if needed

This works especially well for short-form videos.

What does not fix it (don’t waste time)

  • Clearing cache only
  • Reinstalling CapCut
  • Updating the app (bug persists across versions)
  • Restarting phone repeatedly

Why CapCut hasn’t fixed this yet

  • Unfold is part of a legacy animation pack

  • CapCut prioritizes newer “Pro” animations

  • The animation UI is session-based, not persistent

In short: it’s a backend issue, not user error.

Pro tip (best long-term solution)

If you need Unfold on every single video, create a template project:

  • One clip with Unfold applied

  • Duplicate the project every time

  • Replace media only

This completely bypasses the animation bug.

Can you share the below details to help you further:

  • You are using CapCut Mobile or PC

  • Aspect ratio used

  • Short-form or long-form content

We can give you a zero-friction workflow so you never have to fight CapCut over Unfold again.
