Hi,

To downgrade CapCut to an older version on your MacBook, follow these steps carefully. You will need to manually download and install the .dmg file for a previous version.

IMPORTANT:

Before proceeding, make sure to:

  • Backup your CapCut projects (you can export them or back up the CapCut folder in ~/Movies/CapCut or ~/Library/Application Support/CapCut)

  • Uninstall the current version of CapCut properly

  • Project Compatibility: Projects created or saved in CapCut 6.5.0 might not be compatible with older versions. It's highly recommended to finish and export any ongoing projects in CapCut 6.5.0 before attempting a downgrade.
  • Data Backup: While downgrading typically doesn't affect your personal files, it's always a good practice to back up any important data on your MacBook before making significant system changes.

Step-by-Step Guide to Downgrade CapCut on Mac

Step 1: Uninstall Current Version

  1. Quit CapCut completely.

  2. Open Finder > Applications.

  3. Drag CapCut to the Trash.

  4. Then open Finder > Go > Go to Folder and type:

    ~/Library/Application Support/

Delete the CapCut folder to clean cache (optional, for a clean install).

  5. For a cleaner uninstall, you might want to also remove associated files (preferences, caches, etc.). You can do this manually by checking ~/Library/Caches/, ~/Library/Preferences/, etc., for CapCut-related folders and files.
  6. Be careful when deleting files from the Library folder, as deleting the wrong files can cause issues with other applications. Alternatively, you can use a third-party uninstaller tool (like AppCleaner) to help with a more thorough removal.

Step 2: Download Older Version of CapCut for Mac

You can download the .dmg file for MAC from here.

You can look for an older .dmg file from thid party websites such as UptoDown. Look for a version like CapCut_6.2.0.dmg or CapCut_5.9.0.dmg which are known to be more stable on older Mac hardware.

Step 3: Install the Older Version

  1. Once you've found a suitable older version (e.g., a .dmg file) from a trusted source, download it.
  2. Double-click the downloaded .dmg file.

  3. Drag the CapCut icon to your Applications folder.

  4. Launch CapCut and check if performance is better.

Disable Auto-Update

After installing an older version, CapCut might prompt you to update to the latest version. It's crucial to decline or disable these update prompts to prevent the issue from recurring.

Look for "Update" options within the CapCut application settings and disable automatic updates. If there's just a pop-up, make sure you always close it and never click "Update."

CapCut might auto-update again. To prevent that:

  • Use a firewall app like LuLu or Little Snitch to block CapCut's internet access, or

  • Keep using CapCut offline if you only edit and export without cloud sync.

Troubleshooting Overheating:

Even with an older version, if your MacBook continues to overheat, it might indicate other issues. Here are some general tips for MacBook overheating:

  • Activity Monitor: Open Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities) and check the "CPU" tab to see if any other applications are consuming excessive CPU resources. Close any unnecessary apps.

  • Clean Fans/Vents: Ensure your MacBook's vents are not blocked and that the fans are clean. Dust buildup can significantly impede airflow and lead to overheating.

  • SMC Reset: For Intel-based Macs, resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) can sometimes resolve fan and thermal management issues. The steps vary depending on your specific MacBook model (with or without T2 chip). You can find official Apple instructions on how to do this.

  • Keep macOS Updated: While you're downgrading CapCut, ensure your macOS itself is up to date (unless you know a specific macOS update caused issues with other software). Operating system updates often include performance and thermal management improvements.

By following these steps, you should be able to get an older, more stable version of CapCut running on your MacBook.
