Has anyone else run into issues with Capcut lagging after every edit after this last update? It will freeze the application for up to 1 minute

Hi,

It is quite common for users to report performance changes, including lagging or freezing, after CapCut updates.

Here is a breakdown of why this might be happening and what you can try:

Why Updates Can Cause Lagging:

  1. New Bugs: The update itself might contain new bugs or inefficient code that negatively impacts performance, especially during resource-intensive tasks like applying edits.
  2. Increased Resource Demand: New features or changes under the hood might require more processing power (CPU/GPU), memory (RAM), or faster storage access than previous versions, potentially overwhelming your device's capabilities.
  3. Compatibility Issues: The updated app might have unforeseen conflicts with your specific operating system version, other background apps, or even your device's hardware drivers (especially relevant on PC/Mac).
  4. Cache Problems: Sometimes, leftover cache files from the previous version can interfere with the new version, causing slowdowns or glitches.
  5. Feature Interaction: A specific new feature or a change in how an existing feature works (like rendering previews after edits) could be the bottleneck.

Troubleshooting Steps You Can Take:

  1. Restart Everything:

    • Close CapCut completely (don't just minimize it).
    • Restart your device (phone, tablet, or computer). This is often the simplest and surprisingly effective fix.
  2. Check for Further Updates:

    • Sometimes developers quickly release follow-up patches (hotfixes) to address issues reported after a major update. Check your app store (Google Play Store, Apple App Store) or the CapCut website for any newer versions released since the one causing you problems.
  3. Clear CapCut's Cache:

    • On Mobile (Android/iOS): Go to your device's Settings > Apps (or Applications) > Find CapCut > Storage > Clear Cache. Be cautious about clearing Data, as this might delete project drafts if they aren't saved to the cloud or exported. Start with just the cache.
    • On Desktop (Windows/Mac): The cache location varies. Look within CapCut's settings for a cache clearing option, or search online for "CapCut cache location [Your OS]" to find and manually clear the relevant folders (again, be careful what you delete).
  4. Check Device Resources:

    • Make sure you have enough free storage space on your device. Video editing requires significant temporary space.
    • Close other background applications that might be consuming CPU, GPU, or RAM resources.
    • Monitor your device's performance (Task Manager on Windows, Activity Monitor on Mac, developer options or third-party apps on mobile) while using CapCut to see if a specific resource (CPU, RAM, Disk) is hitting 100%.
  5. Simplify Your Project (Test):

    • Try creating a brand new, very simple project with just one or two short clips. Make a basic edit (like a simple cut). Does it still lag significantly?
    • If the simple project works fine, the issue might be related to the complexity (number of tracks, effects, length) of your current project interacting poorly with the new update.
  6. Check Graphics Drivers (PC/Mac):

    • If you're on a computer, ensure your graphics card drivers are up to date. Video editing relies heavily on the GPU.
  7. Reinstall CapCut:

    • Important: Make sure your projects are backed up or saved/exported first!
    • Uninstall CapCut completely.
    • Restart your device.
    • Reinstall CapCut from the official app store or website. A fresh installation can sometimes resolve issues caused by a faulty update process.
  8. Enable Proxy Media:

    • In CapCut, click on the Settings button, select Settings, go to the Performance tab, and check the Proxy option. This creates lower-resolution copies of your media for smoother editing.

  9. Adjust Video Preview Settings:

    • Lowering the preview resolution can reduce lag during editing.

It is likely that if many users are experiencing this, the CapCut developers are aware or will become aware soon and will hopefully release a patch to fix the performance degradation. In the meantime, hopefully, one of the troubleshooting steps helps mitigate the lagging.
