Just recently updated to the caput 8.1.1 (pro) and noticed now the timeline automatically scrolls during playback, this keeps the playhead centred in view as you playback and does not allow you to scroll forward or backwards during playback.
Questions:
1. Is this part of the update or a bug??
2. I know this is a feature many have asked for but is there anyway we can turn this off, or at least have to option to turn it on/off?
Many users are already used to being able to scroll while in playback and having the option to turn it off/on will please everybody and make the app so much better.
Could you confirm if this is an update or a bug issue???
I have already tried several troubleshooting steps, including:
Restarting the application;
Rebooting my device;
Clearing the app cache;
Creating new projects with different media files;
Confirming that the app is updated to the latest version.
As a CapCut Pro subscriber, I expect a seamless editing experience with full functionality, especially for such a fundamental feature. Therefore, I kindly request:
1. An immediate investigation into this issue by your technical team;
2. An official explanation or acknowledgment of the issue;
3. Updates regarding any upcoming fixes or software patches;
I trust that CapCut will treat this issue with the urgency it requires. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
many thanks
Michael
Hi,
Recent versions of CapCut introduced improved timeline behavior where:
-
The playhead stays centered
-
The timeline auto-scrolls during playback
-
Manual scrolling while playing is limited or disabled
This is commonly called “auto-follow” or “auto-scroll” timeline behavior, and many editors requested it for precision editing.
Is This a Bug or an Update?
Given that:
-
It happens across new and old projects
-
Restarting and cache clearing didn’t fix it
-
You are on the latest version
This means it is an intentional change in 8.1.1, not a glitch.
If it were a bug, it would:
-
Behave inconsistently
-
Only affect certain projects
-
Resolve after cache clearing
Can You Turn It Off?
As of 8.1.1, CapCut does not currently offer a visible toggle to disable auto-scroll during playback.
However, here are a few things you can check:
Look for Timeline Settings
-
Tap the timeline settings or gear icon near timeline
-
Check for options like:
-
“Auto-scroll”
-
“Follow playhead”
-
“Center playhead”
-
“Timeline follow mode”
-
Not all versions expose this setting.
Desktop vs Mobile
If you are using:
-
CapCut Desktop (Windows/Mac) – There may be a hidden toggle in:
-
Settings → Editing
-
Timeline behavior
-
-
Mobile/iPad version – The feature is usually locked with no toggle.
Why CapCut Did This
Keeping the playhead centered:
-
Improves precision trimming
-
Prevents losing the playhead off-screen
-
Mimics behavior from pro editors like:
-
Adobe Premiere Pro
-
Final Cut Pro
-
DaVinci Resolve
-
However those programs all allow you to toggle it on/off, which is why many users expect that flexibility.
Workaround
Until CapCut developers adds a toggle in the next version, you can:
-
Pause playback
-
Scroll to where you want
-
Resume playback
Not ideal but currently the only reliable method.
What we recommend
Since this appears intentional:
-
Submit feedback inside CapCut:
-
Profile → Settings → Feedback
-
- Or email the developers directly at capcut.support@bytedance.com
If users request it, developers usually respond quickly in future updates.
Are you on Desktop or Mobile? Windows, Mac, iPad, or Android?
Hi there,
Thank you for the clear and detailed explanation regarding the timeline behavior in 8.1.1. I really appreciate you confirming that this is an intentional update and not a bug.
While I understand the reasoning behind the auto-follow feature, it would be great if users could have the option to toggle it on or off like other products offer. Different editors have different workflow preferences, and having that flexibility would make the experience smoother for everyone. I will submit a request for this. I hope it can be added in there.
I am currently using Mac and cannot see any "gear icon" could you help me find where it is.
Thanks again for the clarification and for being active in the forum.
Best regards,
Michael
Hi,
Agree that workflow flexibility is essential, especially for editors who are used to scrubbing while playing.
Since you are using Mac, let's walk through exactly where things are in the Mac version of CapCut because the layout is a little different from mobile.
On CapCut for Mac, there is no visible gear icon directly on the timeline like some tutorials show as those are usually mobile/iPad screenshots.
So you are not missing it as it simply isn’t there in most Mac builds.
Where to Check on Mac (Step-by-Step)
Check the Top Menu Bar (macOS menu, not inside the timeline)
At the very top of your screen (next to the Apple logo):
CapCut → Settings (or Preferences)
Look under:
-
Editing
-
Timeline
-
Playback
However in version 8.1.1 there is currently no exposed toggle for “Follow Playhead” or “Auto-scroll” in most builds.
Check Inside the Timeline Panel
In some builds, hover your mouse in the timeline area and look carefully in:
-
The far right corner of the timeline header
-
Near zoom controls
-
Next to snapping/magnet icon
But again in 8.1.1 on Mac, this option might not be available.
Why you don’t see a gear icon
Other editors like:
-
Adobe Premiere Pro
-
Final Cut Pro
Have dedicated timeline preference panels.
CapCut Mac is still evolving, and many timeline behaviors are currently hard-coded without user toggles.
Just to Confirm It’s Not Hidden:
Try this:
-
Start playback
-
Press and hold Shift
-
Try scrolling with your trackpad/mouse
If it still locks the playhead to center, then auto-follow is fully enforced in your build.
Currently:
- Auto-scroll during playback is enforced
- No visible toggle
- No timeline gear icon (in most Mac installs)
So you are not overlooking anything it simply isn’t exposed as a setting yet.
CapCut introduced:
-
Centered playhead mode
-
Continuous auto-follow timeline behavior
But unlike professional editors, they haven't yet added:
-
Toggle follow on/off
-
Page scroll vs playhead scroll modes
Below we show you few practical workflow adaptations you can use in CapCut 8.1.1 while the auto-follow behavior is enforced.
None of these disable it but they help you work around it efficiently.
Use the “Pause–Navigate–Resume” Micro-Loop (Fastest Clean Method)
This sounds basic, but the trick is doing it fast enough that it doesn’t break rhythm.
How to make it smooth:
-
Hit Spacebar (pause)
-
Scroll or drag to where you want
-
Hit Spacebar again immediately
If you train yourself to tap space quickly, it becomes almost seamless especially for trimming passes.
Keep your thumb resting on Space so you can tap-pause without thinking.
Use the playhead instead of the timeline
Instead of scrolling the timeline during playback:
-
Click and drag the playhead itself
-
Or click directly in the ruler to reposition
Because auto-follow centers the playhead, moving it essentially “moves the world around it.”
This works well for:
-
Jumping forward during music beats
-
Rechecking edits quickly
Zoom Out Strategically (Big Workflow Hack)
Auto-follow feels restrictive mainly when you're zoomed in.
Try this:
-
Zoom out slightly more than you normally would
-
Keep more timeline visible at once
This reduces how often you need to scroll during playback.
It’s surprisingly effective for:
-
Rough cuts
-
Music sync editing
-
Subtitle timing passes
Use Marker-Based Navigation (Advanced Trick)
If you are reviewing long sections:
-
Drop markers at key points before playback.
-
During playback, pause and jump between markers instead of scrolling.
This keeps you working structurally instead of visually chasing the playhead.
Two-Pass Editing Method (Most Professional Approach)
This mirrors workflows used in:
-
Adobe Premiere Pro
-
Final Cut Pro
-
DaVinci Resolve
Pass 1 – Review Mode
Let auto-follow run. Don’t fight it. Watch and take mental notes.
Pass 2 – Precision Mode
Pause often and navigate manually for adjustments.
Separating review from navigation reduces frustration dramatically.
Trackpad Gesture Trick (Mac Only)
Sometimes horizontal scrolling fights the auto-follow.
Instead:
-
Use two-finger scroll very lightly
-
Or use Shift + scroll for more controlled horizontal movement
It won’t override auto-follow but it helps reposition faster between play sessions.
What not to do
-
Don’t try fighting it during continuous playback as it will always recenter.
-
Don’t assume it’s a glitch — that wastes troubleshooting energy.
Can you let us some more details:
-
What type of content you edit (YouTube, reels, corporate, music videos?)
-
How long your timelines usually are
We can help you with a workflow adaptation specifically to your editing style on Mac.
Hi there,
Thanks for the response, I followed the instructions:
CapCut → Settings (or Preferences)
Look under:
-
Editing
-
Timeline
-
Playback
However when I get to edit section there is nothing for timeline, therefore nothing for playback.
I think this is something I have to adjust to until hopefully, they put in a toggle on/off button.
kind regards
Hi there,
Thanks for the reply, I followed the steps below:
CapCut → Settings (or Preferences)
Look under:
-
Editing
-
Timeline
-
Playback
however I could not find the timeline and payback part.
Michael
Hi there,
Appreciate the detailed reply. I tried following the steps below:
CapCut → Settings (or Preferences)
Look under:
-
Editing
-
Timeline
-
Playback
However there wasn't a timeline/playback section for me to check.
I guess until they bring out an option to toggle on/off I will have to get used to the new feature.
kind regards
On Mac, in the current build of CapCut 8.1.1, there is no Timeline or Playback section inside Preferences. So what you are seeing is correct you are not missing anything.
The Mac version currently has:
-
No timeline gear icon
-
No “Follow Playhead” toggle
-
No playback scroll behavior setting
The feature is enforced.
CapCut desktop is still evolving, and many features are being standardized across:
-
CapCut Mobile
-
CapCut Desktop
Unlike more mature editors such as:
-
Final Cut Pro
-
Adobe Premiere Pro
-
CapCut hasn’t yet exposed granular timeline behavior controls.
CapCut frequently rolls out workflow toggles after feedback especially from Pro users. Since you are on Pro, your feedback matters a lot and hopefully developers will add this feature in the next version.
What to do now:
Many Mac users are adapting by:
-
Treating playback as review mode
-
Treating pause as navigation mode
-
Zooming out slightly more than before
-
Doing rough passes first, precision passes second
It becomes surprisingly natural after a few sessions.
With the new update and the introduction of the auto‑scroll feature, I’m unfortunately no longer able to use CapCut effectively. Without an option to enable or disable this behavior, I will have to consider switching to a different video‑editing solution.
Changes of this magnitude risk alienating long‑time users. I need a platform that remains stable and predictable, rather than one where fundamental features may change from week to week.
Honestly who would want this feature? I can't even see what would be the use for this feature. It makes editing impossible.
